How to Teach Reading when you’re Not a Reading Teacher:
While most middle and high school level teachers were never trained to teach reading, they often get students who are struggling readers or even non-readers in their classes.  This session will provide specific and practical techniques that can be used by teachers from 4th-12th grade in all subject areas to assist students with their reading skills.
 

How to Teach Writing when you’re Not a Reading Teacher:

Writing is a key element to increase student achievement and can help students better comprehend what they are reading in any content area. This session will focus on what the research says is the best way to teach writing from 4th-12th grades.  Come learn some practical strategies that can be used with your students in any content area. 
 

How to Teach Academic Vocabulary when you’re Not a Reading Teacher:

Every teacher knows what it is like to have students memorize words for the vocabulary test and then not know what the same words mean two weeks later.  Come to this session and learn what the research tells us is the best way to teach academic vocabulary to your students so they will retain what they know in long term memory.  You can help your students be successful readers and learners in your content!
 

Literacy and Leadership, a Winning Combination:

Students can’t meet the standards if they can’t read, so administrators must be able to guide their teachers as they teach reading and writing in any content.  What is Literacy Leadership?  This session will focus on what administrators can do to create a building culture where reading and writing are key elements in all content areas.   Come learn how to help build your teachers’ capacity to raise student achievement.

This entertaining session will focus on the physical, intellectual, emotional, and social characteristics of students.  Topics include the implications of these characteristics on curriculum, teaching, learning, and the organization of the school.
 

The Brain, Learning, and Best Practice:

Every child can and will learn given the appropriate opportunity.  How do we modify our teaching strategies in the classroom to make sure that these appropriate opportunities happen for all students?  This session will focus on practical and simple techniques using  brain based concepts that teachers in all subject areas can use on a daily basis.
 

Discipline with the Brain in Mind:

Combining a variety of discipline models, knowledge of how the brain works, common sense, and a sense of humor enables educators to make discipline less punitive and more effective as a way to change student behavior.  This session will offer practical and workable discipline plans for teachers, teams, grade levels, and buildings.
 

Learning and Self-Esteem Go Hand In Hand:

Every child is at risk for many reasons.  How can we create classrooms and schools that are conducive to learning and also help students develop their sense of worth?  This session will focus on positive practices that create positive results for both teachers and students.
 

If These Are The Kids, Who Should The Adults Be?

Based on the characteristics of middle level kids, what should the adults who work  closely with them be like?  What kinds of teachers and administrators work best at the middle level?  Are they a special breed of educators?  You bet!  Come find out if teaching kids this age is really for you.
 

Culture, Leadership and Literacy:

The principal sets the tone in a building, so how does an effective leader develop a school culture where parents, teachers, and students want to increase student achievement?  What are the components of a positive school where teachers and students thrive on a daily basis?  Practical ways to build a positive school culture with an emphasis on reading and writing by all content teachers is the focus of this session.  Using humor, research, and strategies you can use immediately, this session will give you ideas on how to create a school climate where failure is not an option for anyone.  You will leave with a practical foundation model that you can use to increase your teachers’ capacities to help all students achieve.
 

Beating the Odds for All Students:

Educators face the challenge of serving every student who walks through the door, and this session will focus on how teachers and administrators can meet the needs of students who live in poverty.  How do educators increase the academic achievement of these students and create an atmosphere that is conducive to their success at school?   Participants will examine preconceptions students from poverty have toward education and school as well as the differences between student and teacher expectations of school.  Classroom environment and sound instructional strategies for daily classroom use will be emphasized.
 

I’m an Administrator, HELP!

School administrators are like no others.  They are a distinct group with specific needs and traits.  This session will provide insight and practical suggestions about what skills and characteristics are needed to be a successful school leader.
 

I’m a New Teacher, HELP!

Teaching is not easy whether you are a veteran or a first year teacher.  This session will provide practical tips on how a new teacher can and will be successful.  Come prepared to laugh while learning about the survival skills needed to be outstanding in the classroom as you help students increase their achievement.
 

Making Parents Partners:

Schools can’t do it alone.  Parents who feel like partners tend to be more realistic in their expectations, are more forgiving of mistakes, and are more likely to offer helpful feedback.    This session will offer practical guidelines and suggestions on what educators can do to gain support from the “other” adults who play important roles in the lives of our students.
 

Teaching, Testing, and Stress:

It is essential that teachers create classrooms that are conducive to learning and help students develop their sense of worth.  This is to be done while they make sure that their students score well on mandated tests.  Can all this happen together?  This session will provide classroom practices and teaching strategies that will create positive results for both teachers and students in the areas of teaching/learning/testing.
